Top Data Governance Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Assignment 1 of 2:
Design the Right Data Governance Definition for your Organisation
To introduce Data Governance into your organisation, you need a simple definition that can be easily communicated.
Research the different Data Governance definitions and arrive at a definition that works for different stakeholder groups in your organisation such as:
Business Leaders
Data Management Leaders
IT Leaders
For example: You may choose to use one definition for all groups or a distinct version for each stakeholder type. Discuss the definition with a sample of stakeholders from each group and determine if the definition is suitable or requires further change.
Support: We have provided a list of different Data Governance definitions to help get you started.
Assignment 2 of 2:
Create a Data Governance Maturity Model
The presenter highlights the need to implement a Data Governance Maturity assessment.
To achieve this you first need to create a Data Governance Maturity Model.
Use the following document to help compile your own Data Governance Maturity Model as a basis for performing your own benchmark within your organisation or any organisation that wishes to undergo an assessment.
Creating a Data Governance Maturity Model
Objectives of Assignment
The main goal of the assignment listed above was to support your organisation to complete a baseline assessment of Data Governance maturity.
This will enable you to accurately plan and implement the most logical sequence of next steps based on your level of maturity.
This study aid provides a list of resources to help you develop your own Data Governance Maturity Model.
Resource #1: Stanford University Data Governance Maturity Model
Stanford provided a multi-dimensional Data Governance Maturity Model that breaks Data Governance up into foundational components and project related components.
Covers a number of dimensions such as stewardship, data quality, metadata, master data, people, policies and capabilities.
Note: The original model is no longer online but George Firican has summarised here:

Resource #2: Nascio review of multiple Data Governance Maturity Models
Provides a detailed review of Data Governance Maturity Models and why they are important.
Somewhat focused on State Government use cases but the majority of information is relevant for any organisation type. Note that the report focuses not just on Data Governance models but also Data Quality, EIM and Data Management.
